Sep 13 — OSLO, 31 AUGUST

by Parker on September 11th, 2012

Two weeks ago, Cape Breton witnessed a courageous act by recovering addicts from Talbot House, who outed themselves to stage a dignified protest against the Department of Community Services for its treatment of the recovery centre.

OSLO, 31 AUGUST, by director Joachim Trier, a rising star of the Norwegian film industry, offers a clear-eyed but compassionate vision of the courage required to loosen addiction’s grip — a struggle far too many Cape Bretoners have faced.

The film recounts a day in the life of a young recovering addict, who takes a brief leave from his treatment center to interview for a job and catch up with old friends in Oslo.

“Despite its themes, “Oslo, August 31st” is an exhilarating film, with impeccable direction and pitch-perfect performances that make the bleakness worthwhile.” — New York Post

“It’s a marvelously constructed personal journey, both wrenching and bittersweet, whose emotional ripple effects stay with you for days and weeks afterward.” — Rolling Stone

OSLO, 31 AUGUST plays one show only, 7 p.m., Thursday, September 13, at the Empire Theatres Studio 10, 325 Prince St., Sydney. Tickets: $11; Students $7. A seasons pass for the remaining 12 fall movies costs $85. All prices include HST.
