The People’s Choice
Here’s how Cape Breton Island Film Series patrons rated the movies we screened last fall:
SENNA was the surprise winner, followed by WIN WIN and THE INTERRUPTERS. The least popular fall movie was TREE OF LIFE, edging out MEEK’S CUTOFF for the dubious distinction. The average rating for all 14 movies was 3.9 out of 5.0.
Thanks to all who took part in the on-line surveys. My plan is to simplify the surveys for the winter season, and I hope everyone will participate.

One has to be careful when looking at statistics. As the saying goes,”There are lies, damned lies and statistics.
Documentaries may not always bring in the most votes but do they or any film breed discussion. Look at ‘Project Nim’ and the ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ not to mention ‘Page One’. These films were introspective and caused many discussions about how we look at ourselves and both our affect and effect on the world.
In general, I thought all of the films were great. Even the film of ‘Meek’s Cut-off’ (even though the native didn’t look like a native to me) had a meaning that can be taken though its ending left some (not all) left bewildered.
I think that it would be a considered idea to have people rate films by the type of film. I don’t come to see ‘Jane Eyre’ with the same conceptualization or interest as ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ and I don’t see any of them in the same light as ‘Meek’s Cut-off’. but then again, this is only my point of view.
