Nov 10 — THE TREE OF LIFE
Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, and Jessica Chastain star in the latest of director Terrance Malick’s infrequent but critically embraced movies.
THE TREE OF LIFE, which won the Palm d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is an impressionistic story of a midwestern family from the 1950s.
The movie follows the life of eldest son jack, from innocent childhood to his disillusioned adult years as a lost soul in the modern world. But this is a Terrance Malick movie, and Malick’s movies are never simple or straightforward.
As Jack (played as an adult by Penn) tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Pitt), he finds himself seeking answers to the origin and meaning of of life, and this quest is echoed in metaphysical elements of the filmmaking craft.
THE TREE OF LIFE playes one show only, 7 p.m., Thursday, November 10, at the Empire Theatre, 325 Prince Street, Sydney.
Don’t forget our annual l’Arche benefit Sunday with Gordie Sampson. See the next post for details.
