Nov 4 – The l’Arche Party & Babies & How To Be Alone

by Parker on November 1st, 2010

Our fifth annual benefit for l’Arche Cape Breton kicks off at 7 p.m., Thursday, with two films at Empire Sydney. We’ll start with a rare big screen showing of Halifax filmmaker Andrea Dorfman’s charming YouTube hit HOW TO BE ALONE, based on a poem by fellow Haligonian Tanya Davis. The main feature is one of our most requested film: the documentary BABIES. It follows four children from different countries and very different child-rearing cultures through the first year of life. The Boston Globe calls it, “an advertisement for the wonders of figuring out how to be alive.”

At 9 p.m., we’ll move to Sydney’s Waterfront Pavilion for one heck of a party. The whole l’Arche community will be there, so you’ll get to meet some charming, gregarious personalities and their dedicated helpers and friends. We’ll have live music with the Colin Grant Band, and our usual, delicious Lebanese buffet. There’s a cash bar, door prizes, and we’ll draw for a $500 mountain bike from Framework Cycle and Fitness.

All the proceeds help l’Arche carry out the many programs not funded by government that enable it to provide some of the best care in Canada. We’d especially like to thank out sponsors: AECOM, AMEC, CBCL, City Printers, Conestoga-Rovers, Empire Theatres, Framework Cycle and Fitness, Ramsay’s Honda, Sampson McDougall, Schwartz Furniture, Seaside Communications, Sydney Credit Union, Unsworth Kachafanis, and VMP Group.

The movies cost $10 (but are free for season pass-holders). The party and buffet dinner cost $20. Or you can take in both for just $25— surely one of the great entertainment bargains ever. Tickets are on sale now at the Cape Breton Curiosity Shop, 296 Charlotte Street, Sydney.

See you at the movies and the party!
