Nov 5 The Beaches of Agnes
A charming and tender movie buff’s movie by and about the celebrated French filmmaker Agnès Varda, a pioneer of the Rive Gauche (Left Bank) cinema movement and, at 81, an artist of undiminished vigor, curiosity and intelligence. The Beaches of Agnès won a César (the French equivalent of an Oscar) for best documentary in 2009.
“For filmgoers determined to see cinema not just as mass entertainment but as an art form, The Beaches of Agnes arrives like an exhilarating call to arms.” — Washington Post
“A lovely, quirky and not a little poignant film.” — Globe and Mail
O What A Party! – 2009
Don’t forget the film series’ annual benefit for L’ARCHE CAPE BRETON on Nov. 12 (not Nov. 5 as I mistakenly wrote in last week’s email). Thie film is Ramin Bahrani’s GOODBYE SOLO, a touching story of two very different men who form an unlikely friendship. The after party includes our usual Lebanese buffet and music from THE BLUES MERCHANTS. Come meet the wonderful L’Arche crew.
